What do dreams mean? - 22nd February 2012

Have you ever woken up from a full night's sleep feeling groggy and disoriented? This might be because you skipped REM sleep, the phase when dreaming occurs. Studies have shown that people who don't get enough of this kind of sleep can be anxious and irritable, even when they've slept enough hours in total.

Nobody knows for sure why dream interpretation is so important. Some argue that dreaming is the mind's way of coping with stress, while others believe that we use dreams to process all the psychic and sensory stimulation we have received during the day.

Religious interpretations often reflect the belief that God is speaking to us through our dreams. Dream interpretations populate both the Bible and the Quran, among other religious texts, so it is natural that followers of these religions would follow in this tradition.

Non-religious people say that the message comes from the dreamer's own soul, heart, subconscious mind, or another inner source. Thus, dreams can be expressions of unmet desires, such as more time alone, or unexpressed fears, such as health concerns. Dreams can also assist us in making decisions or organizing our thoughts.

When trying to understand what our dreams are telling us, it is important to remember that there are no absolute symbols. You must consider your own personal experience and relate it intelligently to the dream interpretation offered by dream dictionaries and psychics.

That being said, certain principles do apply.

The single most important thing for discovering the meaning of your dreams is the ability to remember in detail what it is you have dreamed. The more accurate your memory of the dream, the closer you will come to understanding what it means.

Through dream interpretation, you will become more self-aware and better in tune with your emotional triggers. You will also learn how to deal with those triggers in the most effective way possible for your personal well-being.

Bringing your dreams into your waking reality through drawing, writing, or sharing them with others will gradually build up your understanding of how you dream. Getting enough sleep and waking naturally are also vital, since jumping out of bed in a sleep-deprived state will make the dream's details vanish.

You don't have to be a psychic to understand what your dreams are telling you. The first step to becoming in tune with your dreaming patterns is to take note of what those patterns are. From there, dream interpretation will start to come more easily.
